How to SORN a Car

If you are leaving your car in a garage, then you don’t have to pay a car tax for it. All you have to do is apply for a SORN, also known as ‘Statutory Off Road Notification’ (SORN). In order to understand how to SORN a car, just follow these DVLA guidelines carefully. You should inform DVLA that you are taking your vehicle off the road.   • Step One: Decide when to take your car off the road.
  • Step Two: Inform DVLA that you want to SORN your car.
  • Step Three: How to get a DVLA car tax refund.
      1. Step One: Decide when to take your car off the road.

        You can either choose to SORN your car right away or during the first day of next month.
        If you want to SORN your car immediately, then you will need your 11-digit number on your vehicle log book (V5C). You V5C card was either given to you by the previous owner or DVLA Swansea provided it to you directly through the post.         If you want to wait until the first day of next month, then you will need your 16-digit number on your vehicle tax reminder letter (V11). However, this number can only be used once. After you have informed DVLA, then your vehicle tax will be cancelled. In case you need to pay DVLA by direct debit, then it will be automatically cancelled as well.

      2. Step Two: Inform DVLA that you want to SORN your car.

        There are three ways of letting DVLA know that you want to SORN your car. You can either do it online, by DVLA contact number to SORN a car, or by post. However, if you are not the registered owner of the car, then you should only do it by post.

        The easiest way to SORN your vehicle is online. However, you can only use this option if you are the registered owner of the vehicle. Before you proceed, you must verify if the name and address on your V5C are correct. This is very important since this will be used in case you have a DVLA refund.SORN vehicle DVLA Online

        • Enter your 16 digit reference number from your V11 reminder. If you do not where to find this, then just hover your mouse to “Where to find this”.
        • Click Continue to proceed.

        If you don’t have the V11 reminder, then all you have to do is click “I don’t have the V11 reminder, just the registration certificate or new keeper supplement”. After clicking, you will be given two options. Choose whether you are the existing keeper or the new keeper.

        If you are the existing keeper, then you need to use the V5C document reference number.
        SORN with existing keeper

        • Enter the 11 digit reference number found at the front of your registration certificate. If you can’t locate this, then just click “Where to find this”.
        • Enter your registration number.
        • Click Continue to proceed.

        If you are the new keeper, then you need to use the V5C/2 supplement document reference number.

        • Enter your reference number found at the front of your new keeper supplement (V5C/2). If you cannot locate this, then just click Where to find this.
        • Enter your registration number.
        • Click Continue to proceed.

        Upon sending your application by post, you must also inform them when you want to start taking your vehicle off the road.
        If you choose any day in the current or previous month, then you cannot avail a vehicle DVLA tax refund for the previous dates.
        If you choose a day in the next month or the month after, then you must include a letter which contains an explanation why you can’t apply for your SORN nearer the time.

      3. Step Three: Get a DVLA car tax refund.

        After you have applied for a SORN. then you can get a refund for all the unused tax months. It is easy to remove a SORN on your car quickly. You will probably get your refund within 6 weeks. If you did not get any or if the information on your cheque is incorrect, then you should contact the DVLA.

        If the information on your cheque is wrong, then you must return your cheque immediately to DVLA.
